Investment casting is a metal casting technique called lost wax casting, in which a wax pattern is used to shape a ceramic mold for creating metal parts. It is also commonly known as precision casting process due to its ability for manufacturing metal components with high accuracy and smooth surface finish.

In the lost wax casting process, a wax pattern is created in accordance with the shape of product and coated with a refractory ceramic material. Subsequently, an expendable ceramic mold is formed when the ceramic material is hardened. After that, molten metal is poured into the empty ceramic mold and then cools until it solidifies into the desired shape.

In today's metalworking industry, investment casting process is becoming more prevalent across many industries thanks for its high versatility. It is capable of producing a variety of complicated shapes that are difficult to be formed by other casting methods. From prototype to more than 10,000 workpieces, investment casting can get the products to be manufactured with premium quality and high efficiency.

  • Stainless steel is one of the common materials used in casting production, notably it is versatile in manufacturing with precision casting (or investment casting).
  • Investment casting made of alloy steel can benefits more properties than carbon steel castings, that includes strength, hardness, toughness, wear resistance, corrosion resistance, etc.

Steps of investment casting
The investment casting process falls into several phases, involving metal die construction, wax pattern production, ceramic mold shaping, molten metal pouring, metal solidification, shakeout (unmolding) and cleaning.

Discussed as one of the net shape or near net shape manufacturing technologies, the investment casting can help foundries and metal casting manufacturers obtain lower cost in material, labor and machining. The most commonly used metals for investment castings are stainless steel, alloy steel, aluminum, bronze, magnesium, carbon steel, brass, etc. And typical investment castings include turbine blades, marine parts, gears, and many other industrial parts with complex geometries.
