The ammonium bromide appears in the form of colorless or white crystalline powder, which is tasteless and odorless, showing slight hygroscopicity in the air and sublimating at 452 ℃. The density is 2.43g/cm3.
The ammonium bromide is soluble in water, and the solution is of weak acidity. It is also soluble in alcohol and slightly soluble in ether. It decomposes when heated, and slight decomposition also happens in the air, separating a small amount of bromine out, so the ammonium bromide looks yellow.
Bromine ions in the ammonium bromide can be replaced by fluorine or chlorine. The ammonium bromide can be oxidized by strong oxidants such as hypochlorite, permanganate, nitric acid and concentrated sulfuric acid, and thus separating the bromine out. Its reaction with silver nitrate can generate the yellow precipitate of silver bromide.

The ammonium bromide can be used for the following purposes:
a) as an industrial sewage treatment agent;
b) as a sedative medicine used to treat epilepsy, neurasthenia and other diseases;
c) as a fireproofing agent in timber industry;
d) for the spotanalysis of copper in analytical chemistry;
e) for lith printing and other fields.
6. Storage and Handling
The ammonium bromide should be store in a cool, ventilatedwarehouse. The container must be sealed to prevent moisture. Pile it separately from deliquescent goods.
