Marine Aluminum and Ship Building Aluminum
Aluminum alloys provide many excellent properties, meaning they are widely used in ship structures and other relevant parts. No matter large or small ships, aluminum alloys serve as excellent assets in the manufacturing process. DLS Aluminum can provide different grades of aluminum alloys for your ships, and they have the following features:
①Lightweight and high strength
Aluminum is a relatively lightweight metal, which is one of the most important factors in ship design because a lighter ship body means greater energy savings. Lightweight doesn’t necessarily mean low strength and some aluminum alloys are even stronger than steel.
②Corrosion resistance
When exposed to marine environments, overcoming the corrosion caused by salty water poses a great challenge for many materials. The natural oxidation process of aluminum provides excellent corrosion protection. Moreover, you can also enhance the resistance of the material by adding other protective coatings.
③Machinability
The machinability of aluminum alloys is an important reason why they are widely used in the shipbuilding industry. They can be processed into different shapes, and due to its easy processing, the cost is much lower than that of steel.
Alloy | Status | Features | Main applications |
5052 aluminum coil | O/H14/H34 | Medium strength, good corrosion resistance and formability, high fatigue strength | Superstructure, auxiliary structure, little ship body |
5083 aluminum plate | O/H32/H116 | Typical alloys for welding, highest strength in non-heat treatment alloys, good weldability, corrosion resistance and cryogenic property | Main structure of ship body, LNG spherical tanks |
5086 aluminum plate | H116 | Same weldability and corrosion resistance as 5083 aluminum plate | Main structure of ship body |
5454 aluminum plate | O/H32 | 22% higher strength than 5052 aluminum plate, good weldability and corrosion resistance, ordinary formability | Ship body structure |
5456 aluminum plate | O/H32 | Similar with 5083 but higher strength, with stress corrosion cracking susceptibility | Ship bottom and deck |
1050/1020 aluminum foil | H112/H12/H24 | Low strength, good machinability, weldability and corrosion resistance, high surface treatment performance | Inner decoration |
3003/3203 aluminum strip | O/H112/H12 | 10% higher strength than 1100, good formability, weldability and corrosion resistance | Inner decoration |
